Role profile
As Marine Policy Associate you will be at the forefront of shaping impactful policies for the protection of the Greek seas, advocating for the establishment and management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). You will lead the efforts for advancing marine conservation, building partnerships, and driving initiatives that protect our marine ecosystems. You will also be responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing marine policy related projects, collaborating with stakeholders, and ensuring the successful implementation of environmental advocacy initiatives.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, implement and oversee marine policy related projects.
- Develop policy advocacy strategies and carry out advocacy actions in relation to marine biodiversity conservation and MPA management.
- Draft policy briefs and other advocacy materials to promote policy and legislative proposals on marine biodiversity protection.
- Conduct research on MPA design, establishment and management and contribute to the dissemination of the findings.
- Organise meetings and workshops to present and discuss recommendations to the national authorities.
- Engage with policy-makers at the national and EU level and with a variety of stakeholders to increase political visibility of issues related to marine biodiversity conservation.
- Pursue synergies with other NGOs and the scientific community to exchange ideas, information and data, and explore opportunities to jointly develop and present recommendations and proposals to the authorities.
- Contribute, in collaboration with communication colleagues, to the development of communications activities and materials to influence policy-makers and raise awareness in relation to marine conservation in Greece.
What we are looking for
Required Qualifications
- Postgraduate diploma in a field related to any aspect of the protection of the marine environment (i.e. scientific, policy, legal), MPA management, marine spatial planning, and other relevant topics.
- At least 2 years of professional experience in a position related to the above subjects and/or project management.
- Understanding of current political affairs, trends and developments and of the relationship between environmental conservation and the external political agenda.
- Very good knowledge of the policy and legal framework at national, EU and international levels for the protection of marine biodiversity and the marine environment, MPA management and marine spatial planning.
- Ability to critically analyse and interpret information on environmental policy issues and the implementation of the legal framework for environmental protection.

- Excellent communication skills, with fluency (spoken and written) in both Greek and English.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and pursue synergies with a wide network of partners and stakeholders.
- Strong project management skills.
- Conscientiousness and efficiency in meeting deadlines and achieving results.
- Ability to deal effectively with complex issues and in finding feasible solutions.
- Highly developed active listening skills and ability to interpret the messages of others correctly and respond to them appropriately.
- Openness in sharing information.
- Ability to work effectively within a team setting and establish harmonious cooperation based on mutual respect and understanding.
- Ability to place team agenda before personal agenda; to support and act in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position.
- Willingness to share credit for team achievements and to accept joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
Additional information
The position refers to the Nature Policy Officer and is part of the environmental policy department team. It requires close cooperation with all departments of the organisation. It is a full-time position based in Athens (one-year contract with renewal option). It requires some travels in Greece and abroad.
