The Dadia Forest National Park is a key sight for our initiative, as it constitutes one of the most significant feeding and breeding grounds for 36 different endangered species of birds of prey.
WWF Greece has been involved in the Dadia Forest since 1979 and maintained a steady presence in the area for 30 years before passing its work on to the Society for the Protection of the Biodiversity of Thrace. The Society remains a key partner of our initiative.
During the summer of 2023, the rich biodiversity region of Evros suffered the largest megafire ever recorded in Europe, in a particularly intense forest wildfire season that burned almost 175,000 hectares. 35 people have died and hundreds have been injured. Settlements and sites of cultural importance have been devastated, as well as public and productive infrastructures. Most important to our cause, the fire season has seen more than 70,000ha in over 29 different protected areas burnt.
